A small port town on the coast of the Pacific ocean Pisco is famous all over the world, first of all, for its strong alcoholic drink Pisco and immense vineyards of its surroundings. However, not only lovers of the grape brandy visit this cute Peruvian town. Despite the fact that the strongest earthquake of 2007 destroyed almost all the major buildings, one of the main landmarks of Pisco, whose age is more than 500 years, managed to survive again.

An ancient Peruvian architectural complex dating the 15th century is located a few kilometers away from Pisco. It’s one of the most visited tourist sites in the region of Ica. Even though all the buildings have no roofs, they have been perfectly preserved and can give you a clear idea of the architecture of the time of the Inca Empire.

The complex got its name, Tambo Colorado, because of the walls painted with different colors that you can see today. Bright red, yellow, black and white horizontal stripes decorate nearly all the walls, and some of them have unique wall paintings that have remained, are characteristic of the period of the ninth king of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. At that period the great Inca Empire was expanding its borders sweepingly, king Pachacuti conquered the lands of the Chincha people, whose cultural influence is clearly seen in the painting of some of the walls in Tambo Colorado, and also in carved statues of people found in the niches of the ancient temple.

During the building of that impressive adobe complex in 1470, all the smallest details were thought through, taking into account the weather conditions and the possibility of seismic activity. For example, all the windows have a trapezoidal shape that suits perfectly for protecting houses from numerous earthquakes in that area, and the sacred altar is situated between two mountains. If you are facing it, you can enjoy a stunning view of the sunset over the magnificent Pacific Ocean. All the complex consists of four main buildings: Southern and Northern palaces, a so-called temple in the shape of a spacious platform for rituals, and a small housekeeping area.
