The main landmark of Georgetown is an Anglican wooden St. George's Cathedral built in 1889-1892.

This building is considered one of the highest wooden cathedrals in the world: its bell tower rises 43,5 meters above the ground.

Today, it is not only a functioning cathedral, but also an attractive touristic site; if you ask local residents what to see in Guyana’s capital, most of them will mention St. George's Cathedral. Light decoration of the exterior is impressive, but the furnishing inside the cathedral appears before the visitors no less spectacular.

The interior is styled as Gothic: intricate stained glass windows, impeccable wooden furnishing don’t just demonstrate the competence of the local builders and architects and their attention to details, it also says a lot about Guyana’s history and culture throughout centuries. Most of the materials are made from local natural resources, and the massive chandelier in the cathedral is Queen Victoria’s gift.

Attending a church service at St. George's Cathedral can be an unusual experience for representatives of different religious confessions as well as atheists; the cathedral is interesting as both a religious object and a museum. Besides, the acoustics in the cathedral is incredible, and the temple singing here turns into an extraordinary concert.

The highest wooden building in the world is a great example of architectural heritage and one of the best-preserved buildings in Guyana. It is a national monument.

The first Anglican church in Georgetown was built in 1810 in the place where the school of St. George is located now. Soon enough the church got too small to accommodate the growing number of parishioners. The history of laying and building new churches in this city is quite long, however unfortunate. The only successful plan was the erection of St. George's Cathedral.

The cathedral was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield and opened on the 24th of August 1892, however, the building process was completed only in 1899. Almost the whole cathedral is made of wood except the low stone basement walls. The inside part of the cathedral with its pointed arches, distinctive buttresses, and vault ceilings is as impressive as its elegant “appearance” standing out at the crossroads of the main streets of Georgetown.

The interior and the furnishing of the cathedral are capable of telling stories, whether they are articles of furniture, vessels for worship, the memorial tablets, or the metric books. You can glimpse at Guyana's history as well as the history of its Caribbean neighbors.
