Located almost in the center of Ambato, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Elevation, built in 1954, is the city’s architectural landmark.
Initially, there was a small chapel on this spot. According to historical data, it appeared in 1689 and was relatively modest in appearance. Unfortunately, an earthquake annihilated it, and a beautiful temple was erected instead of it there. It didn’t last long too, the Riobamba earthquake in 1797 destroyed it partially. The temple was restored. People hoped that that time it would last forever. But in 1949, there was another earthquake in Ambato itself. It was a disaster. Not only the city was damaged, but people were killed too. The temple was demolished. Only ruins were left.
In 1954, this historical place saw the opening of a new temple that was built with consideration of the particularities of the area. Its seismic stability is so high that even strong tremors can’t hurt it.
The architectural design of the temple is rather unusual. Its belltower resembles a skyscraper, and the dome – some governmental institution. But the general picture is lovely. The snow-white cathedral stands out among other buildings, and it can be seen from any point of the city. In the evening, thanks to its bright illumination, the temple turns into a fairy-tale castle that you can’t help but contemplate.
Inside the temple, there is the main attraction, the stained glass depicting Christ’s apostles. The local artists made them with the help of modern technologies, but according to the work principles of the old masters. That’s why those glass paintings look so marvelous. And the light, coming through such windows, paints the cathedral walls with bright colors.
Besides, the temple has several altars. Each can be considered real work of art because of the artists’ delicate and elegant work on decorating every piece of the altar.
