A vacation in Colombia has a promise of becoming the biggest burst of music and dance of your life. This country can be legally called a home of festivals. Almost every city boasts some kind of colorful and vibrant festivity. In April, thousands of tourists from all over Colombia and the world go to Valledupar. With smiles on their faces, they dance to the beat of the music. Every year, for more than fifty-two rounds, the Vallenato Legend Festival is held in Valledupar.
It isn’t easy to describe this event. You need to feel it: crowds of people in colorful costumes and unfamiliar, queerish, but foot-tapping music. Valledupar is the birthplace of an original musical style, «vallenato». The festival is not meant only for entertainment. Dancers and singers tell the story of the holiday with their art and share information on Colombian traditions and customs with tourists. Also, the Vallenato Legend Festival is dedicated to the city’s patroness, Our Lady of the Rosary.
If you visit the festival for two years in a row, you will be surprised at the difference in the number of attendees. Every year there are more and more of them! That is why this celebration of dance, song, music, friendship, and culture was moved to a larger location. Until the end of the 20th century, the festival took place in the square named after Alfonso Lopez. Gradually, the square lost its ability to accommodate such a flow of tourists. In the early 2000s, the festival began to be held in Consuelo Araújo Noguera Park. It is located in the northern part of the city and is designed for 40 000 spectators, but the festival will soon have to find another home.
Consuelo Araújo Noguera Park is a very picturesque place. There are an artificial pond and a small forest. To sit in the shade overlooking the lake and enjoy Colombian music feels great! When there are short breaks in the festival program, go for a walk in the park. In addition to the lake, there are many other exciting tourist attractions.
