Do you like sweets? Sugar is the basis of a significant part of them. Even though it isn’t a very healthy product, it is totally natural. Mostly, it is produced from sugarcane. The production process is fascinating and picturesque if the farm is located somewhere in Colombia.

There is one like that in the city of Cali. However, it has been turned into a sugarcane museum. It is located in a splendid place. When you arrive, it seems that your visit’s goal isn’t a tour of a museum but a union with nature in an enormous botanical garden. Along the stone paths, cute bushes are planted, broad-leaved palms and aromatic flowers grow on the evenly cut lawn. Walking from station to station, you lose yourself in nature.

But the museum itself is no less exciting. The tourists are greeted by the guide and the first sugar making tools. Only 25% of the juice was produced with the help of the wooden presses. With time, the production process developed. By the 17th century, when animals replaced slave labor, it became possible to extract 50% of the juice. The further it went, the better it became. Modern equipment is also displayed in the museum. For example, the hydraulic press. It is the most effective tool to produce juice at the moment. All the machinery is functioning. Pausing their story, the guides show how each of the pieces works.

In between the stations – those wooden houses, where the presses and juice tanks are kept – you can see how the cane grows and how it should be taken care of.

The end of the tour is sweet. The last station offers the guests an opportunity to taste freshly produced sugarcane juice, which is called guarapo. Lemon is added to reduce the sweetness of the drink. Then you get a sweet cane too. It is delicious and can even refresh you.

As you know, sugar influences the way our brain works, stimulates the happy hormones and improves the mood. After the tour, you will be both impressed and full.
