Walk through the exotic jungle within Rio de Janeiro, take a scenic cable car ride, go rock climbing in one of the largest urban centers in the world, enjoy a magnificent panorama of the city and a wonderful view of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, fly a helicopter, have dinner in a luxury restaurant, enjoy a stunning sunset... This is by no means a complete list of entertainment and experiences that Sugarloaf Mountain offers. Choose what you like and go to the second most important mountain and observation deck in Rio de Janeiro.

Many people wonder why the mountain has such a strange name, but even locals do not have an exact answer to this question. According to one theory, the name of the mountain comes from the fact that it resembles a piece of sugar, an Easter cake called «sugar bread», or a conical container in which the Portuguese carried sugar. According to another theory, the name comes from sugar cane, which once covered the mountain slopes. Whether it is true or not – nobody knows, because for a long time there has been virtually nothing growing on Sugarloaf Mountain. The name of the mountain may come from the phrase «paunh-acqua» – «high hill» or «bay guard» by the Tupi people. Perhaps because of the cavalry helmets of the Crusader Knights who may have been the first to conquer the land. Which is your favorite story about the origin of the name of the mountain?

Sugarloaf Mountain rises above Guanabara Bay on the east side of Rio de Janeiro. Its height is 396 meters. The mountain does have an unusual shape that attracts attention. Its surface is covered with the lifeless magmatic rock that has been weathered for hundreds of years. At the same time, a thick tropical forest with amazing flora and fauna was formed at the foot of the Sugarloaf Mountain. You can combine a walk through this urban jungle with climbing the neighboring Urca Hill, and then take the funicular with a view – it will take you to the top of the mountain in a couple of minutes. Alternatively, linger on the Urca and visit the amphitheater, which often hosts music and dance shows.
