The Argentine city of Rio Cuarto has been developing since 1573. It has a long history. Small independent Spanish settlements were fighting with Indians who were also coming to this territory for living. And finally, in 1786, Marquis Sobremont founded the city with the long and high-sounding name Villa de la Concepción del Rio Quarto. Yes, this city was originally named like this. Now we call it Rio Quarto.

The monumental cathedral of Rio Cuarto is subtle and luxurious at the same time. It was erected on the site that Marquis Sobremonte personally chose in 1794. The current building is not the first or even the second version of the church.

The construction of the famous temple started in 1883. Pope Antonio Cardarelli was the project manager. It was he who put the first stone to the basement of the future cathedral on December 8.

The temple was built by Italian workers, the engineer Tontani and designers, Brothers Palazzo. Speaking of the size, the building is relatively small. It is 40 meters long, 18 meters wide, 28 meters high.

Though it is not the largest religious building in Argentina, the temple looks very impressive. The first service took place right after the start of construction, in 1886. But the temple was consecrated in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary only 4 years later. The building got the status of the cathedral only in 1934, with the blessing of Bishop Reginaldo Toro.

The look of the cathedral is very eclectic. It harmoniously combines the features of neo-romanticism and neo-Gothic style. Sharp, elongated towers and delicate columns make it look brighter. The temple is more than 200 years old, it has been recently restored and became even more beautiful.
