The birthplace of the Serbian capital’s history still attracts tourists who have just arrived in Belgrade. The oldest building and the main attraction of the city, the Belgrade Fortress, fascinate with its beauty and makes an indelible impression on tourists with its grandeur.

The great stone citadel at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers consists of the Upper and Lower Towns and the giant Kalemegdan Park. The very first fortifications were discovered within the Upper Town. It is hard to believe that they were built by the ancient Romans in the 1st century BC. This time is considered the date of the fortress foundation.

With a length of 560 meters and a width of 350 meters, the fortifications were designed to protect the ancient settlement from barbarian attacks. The sound walls had protected the local lands for seven centuries until new fortifications were built, and the Roman citadel was expanded during the rule of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I at the end of the 6th century.

Under the ruler of Serbia Stefan Lazarevic, the fortress was divided into the Upper and Lower Towns, and most of the fortifications (preserved until today) were built.

Many troubles and misfortunes befell the Belgrade Fortress. Its impregnable stone walls withstood the siege of the Ottoman Turks many times. Only Sultan Suleiman managed to besiege the fortress and take the city of Belgrade.

Later, the Austro-Hungarians also contributed to its construction. Many local buildings appeared thanks to the talented architect Andrea Cornaro. At the same time, the ancient fortress was adorned with Christian churches. Later, at the end of the 19th century, the ancient architectural monument completely lost its original defensive significance. Two world wars practically turned the great fortress into ruins: walls and towers were damaged, many fortifications were destroyed. Years of thorough restoration made it possible to preserve the unique historical monument.

Today, the Belgrade Fortress is one of the most visited tourist sites in Serbia and the entire Balkan Peninsula.
