Moldova is worldwide famous for its winery traditions because its production is one of the main activities of the citizens. It is not a surprise that there is one of the oldest storage of this drink in the world - Milestii Mici.
Wineries are situated in a village Milestii Mici. You can get there from Kishinev for half an hour. Milestii Mici is one of the most ancient villages in Moldova. The first time it was mentioned in 1528, but archeologists found the colonization evidence of the 10th century BC. A long time ago, this territory was marine, so the landscape seems unusual – it is abundant of limestone and shell rock.
In the 70s years of the 20th century, there were established the storage of natural wine. The bottles with an alcoholic drink are kept in the limestone galleries at a depth of 30-85 meters. There is a real city underground, and even the transport runs in the galleries of 250 kilometers long! Some of the branches of the underground passageways reach the boundaries of modern Kishinev.
In addition, there is a perfect climate for wine: the temperature of the air is about +12-+14 Celsius degrees, and humidity reaches 85-95%. In these conditions, the drink is not just well kept, but it also ripens in the right way.
The wine collection in the storage impresses a lot, there you find the drinks of different ages, starting with 1986. To the present day, wine producers bring wine for keeping and ripening from all over the world. Also, Milestii Mici has its vineyard, which is used for winemaking. So, it has own label. Now you can find here bottles of different sorts: Pinot, Traminer, Muscat, Riesling, Fetyaska, Dniester, Milesti, Codru, Rose of Moldova, Auriu, Morning Rose and many other kinds.
The atmosphere of an old winery reigns in this place. You can get this feeling even at the entrance of Milestii Mici. First of all, the visitors see a stoned barrel – the monument to the package, where the most popular sort of wine Cabernet is kept. On the territory, there are fountains of red and white wine. Besides, the curious tourists will be impressed by a local architecture in a style of old castles and underground waterfall with the purest water.
