One of the main sights of the Bremen City – the ancient St. Peter’s Cathedral. This cathedral has a long history and is located almost in the center of the city, what attracts a big number of tourists.

According to the historical documents, in the place of the cathedral, there was a small wooden church, built in 789. Three years later, Bremen was set on fire by the militant Saxons, and this church was completely burned.

The first construction works of a new cathedral were started in 805. Traditionally, the building of the large cathedral was delayed: firstly, the city had not any money, then – the authorities did not like the ideas of architects, and in 1041 a fire destroyed the part of the construction and the entire library. As a result, the works were finished in 400 years. And then, the look of the cathedral did not attract, but even frightened the parish, because it looked so big and magnificent for a city without any high constructions.

By the way, St. Peter's Cathedral was an extremely hard nut to crack. During its long history, the cathedral had just two restorations: in the 19th century, when the coverings became old, and, after the Second World War when the cathedral was damaged during the bombardment.

Today, in St. Peter's Cathedral there is an interesting museum, where you can learn the history of the building, the community, see the ancient exhibits related to the city and parish life. The most interesting item is the statue of St. Peter. According to the legend, he has keys in his hands that can open the doors to paradise.

And one more interesting fact: usually, in the cathedrals, is located just one organ accompanying the service, but for that cathedral, people went too far and installed 5 organs of different sizes! That is why, only in this place, you can listen to the whole organ ensemble, their sound is impressive.
