The First and the Second World Wars had a special impact on France, as the number of victims of hostilities on the territory of the country and abroad was one of the largest in Europe. Due to this fact, it was decided to build a monument in the city of Le Havre, that was destroyed almost to the ground in 1944. The Memorial to the Victims (Monuments aux morts) was erected on Charles de Gaulle Square.
It is a must-visit place for every tourist who comes to the city of Le Havre. Locals are sincerely proud of the monument and believe that it is not just a memorial. For them, it is a monument of Victory, a reminder of the strength of spirit, endurance, and patriotism of the people.
The size of the monument is impressive: the height is more than 10 meters and the width is almost 5 meters. The sculptor chose a very good location for this memorial. It stands right in the center of the city, opposite the sea horizon. It seems to be watching all of Le Havre.
Close to the Memorial to the Victims, there are many places that may be interesting to visit. For example, the avant-garde cultural center «Vulcan» (Le Volcan: Scène Nationale du Havre), which often hosts various events. It is one of the most famous concert halls and exhibition venues in the city. Its part is the Library of Oscar Niemeyer, who was the architect of «Vulcan». The building resembles a spaceship inside and attracts a large number of tourists every year. Right next to the city hall, there is the Theater (Théâtre de l'hotel de Ville). In the center, close to all these attractions, there are many different cafes and restaurants where you can relax a little, try local cuisine, and just feel the atmosphere of real France.
Le Havre is a place worth to visit when traveling in France. Special attention should be paid to the Memorial to the Victims, which wins the hearts with its splendor and strength at first glance.
