Strahov Monastery is one of the most outstanding monuments of sacred architecture in the Czech Republic. Founded in the 12th century by the Czech King Wenceslaus II, the original monastery was wooden. But a few years later, the monks built solid stone walls and the ancient religious buildings in the Romanesque style. Unfortunately, only indistinct memories of those times have been preserved on the pages of the monastery manuscripts. After a strong fire in the 13th century, the monastery was rebuilt in the early Gothic style.
Repeated reconstructions had pursued the church complex until the monastery walls were destroyed by French troops. The famous sculptor Anselmo Lurago restored them in his favorite Baroque style. Since that Strahov Monastery has not changed, preserving its magnificent interior for modern tourists.
Nowadays, Strahov Monastery combines several tourist attractions at once. It houses the Strahov Art Gallery, the Museum of National Literature, and the Museum of Miniatures, as well as the world-famous library.
The collection of paintings in the monastery's art gallery dates back to the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, it consisted of almost 1000 works by talented painters of the 14th-19th centuries. The gallery was opened at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the permanent exposition, it regularly hosts temporary exhibitions of both Czech and foreign masters.
The legendary Library of Strahov Monastery is more than 800 years old. The oldest books here date back to the 12th century. It is known not only for its ancient books but also for the original frescoes that cover its ancient walls.
Moreover, the monastery is famous all over the world for its brewery and beer named "St. Norbert"." Even Prague citizens, who are real aficionados of this drink, consider the St. Norbert beer one of the most delicious.
