The works of David Cerny, the scandalous sculptor and author of provocative works, have been repeatedly criticized by the public. However, this did not prevent him from becoming the most outstanding representative of the modern art world. His unusual sculptures adorn the main streets of the Czech capital. In 2001, the world-famous artist even founded his own contemporary art center in Prague.
The non-profit cultural project MeetFactory includes three contemporary art movements: music, theater, and pictorial art, as well as a huge art workshop.
David Cerny's original project was almost destroyed during the severe flooding that struck many European countries in 2002. A couple of years later, the center was re-opened in a new building. It occupied a former glass factory of the early 20th century. Glass and crystal production here was suspended back in 1935. Then the building was occupied by the Skoda company, which produced its engines and car parts here. At the end of the 20th century, the building was completely abandoned. It had been empty for several years until it became the permanent home of the art center.
Today, MeetFactory is one of the most visited sights of the Czech Republic dedicated to contemporary art. The brainchild of Cerny is a real factory of talented craftsmen, somewhat reminiscent of the legendary Warhol's factory famous all over the world in the 1960s. Here you can not only see the modern art but also the artists themselves, as they live right in the art center.
The first floor of the building is a living space provided to artists as part of international cultural exchange. Fifteen spacious studios with an area of 3,500 square meters annually become a temporary home for 30 foreign artists. The first floor of MeetFactory also hosts various masterclasses on creating art objects available for everyone. This is the unique local way to afford ground for the cultural dialogue between the viewer and the artist, as well as the cultural exchange of experience.
The second floor of the center is occupied by works of art: paintings, sculptures, installations. The art of music is represented by regular classical and experimental music concerts. The MeetFactory theater hosts the theatrical performances of foreign screenwriters and directors. The audience especially likes unpopular youth theater productions on various philosophical and social issues.
