Many centuries ago, not far from the city of Nicosia, there was a small convent. When and by whom it was built, no one remembered. But there were a few nuns, who lived in it, protecting their monastery.

But the constant wars and repartitions made it so that King Jacob needed a strong fortification, which could protect Nicosia from the regular raids of the Genoese. This ancient monastery was the ideal place. Assuming that the protection of the city was more important, the king ordered the nuns to be kicked out and to build a large fortress in place of their monastery. Thus, in 1385, the castle of La Cava appeared.

The first poor people who were looking for protection began to settle around it, and then here came merchants and the nobility, since many trade routes passed through La Cava Castle. The city of Aglandjia, which at that time had another name, was formed just around this ancient castle, designed to protect the people and guarantee their well-being.

Unfortunately, the age of La Cava Castle was short. The first time it was destroyed in 1426, and that was the beginning of the end of the once strong and beautiful castle. After the invasion of the Mamelukes, the locals rebuilt La Cava Castle, but almost a century later, in the 1530s, it was blown up by the Venetians, who wanted full control of the trade routes. And it was the castle, with its high defensive walls, that was the main obstacle.

The Ottomans partially rebuilt La Cava Castle and used it long enough to store gunpowder. The castle finally collapsed in 1878, when one of the towers, where explosives were stored, accidentally exploded.

The resourceful Cypriots did not consider it a great tragedy and began to use the stones of the castle for the construction of the Church of Panagia Faneromeni in Nicosia. Having destroyed one structure, they erected another, no less beautiful one.
