There is a beautiful, noble flower that can rightfully be considered a symbol and national treasure of Bulgaria. This flower is an oil rose.
The valley of Roses is like a painting by a great artist. The fragrance spreads for kilometers, it is impossible to avoid this place! The typical smell of roses is given only by red and pink roses, the rest can smell of lemon, violet, lavender.
The magic scent of flowers just makes you dizzy. And the sight of colorful rainbow-colored buds excites the imagination. Bulgarians have been growing roses for centuries. They collect the petals manually. Then essential oils are extracted from them, which are widely used in the perfume industry and cosmetology.
Bulgarians collect petals from sunrise to 10 am, since only in the morning the rose will give the maximum amount of oil. In Bulgaria, even in the smallest shop on the outskirts of the city, you can buy a jar of jam from the fragrant petals of the oil rose, a liqueur aged on their basis, or a tiny bottle of essence made from the oil of the Bulgarian oil rose.
The valley is located in the village of Kazanlak, between the Stara Planina mountain and the Sredna Mountains, and occupies 300 hectares of land. The rose collection runs from May 20 to June 20. The Bulgarian rose festival is held on the first weekend of June.
