Being the centre of viticulture and winemaking, the Bulgarian city of Sliven has a lot to offer to its guests, but the main treasures of this place cannot be found in cloths factories or distilleries. They are hidden out of sight in the shade of the high Balkan Mountains, surrounded by dense forests of the Blue Stones Natural Park.
On the large area of 11 thousand hectares located the main landmark of Sliven – the Waterfall Futuna with a cave. Even the route to the waterfall is enjoyable enough, with all the magnificent natural landscapes. The fascinating journey starts at an upper station of the cableway. It is possible to get to the station by car, the ride will take only a few minutes. The station is located only 30 kilometres away from the centre of Sliven. One can ride the cableway or walk and enjoy the views. The length of the cableway is almost 2 kilometres with the height reaching 600 metres. The 20 minutes that the ride takes will fly by so fast that one would want to take it again just to appreciate the picturesque nature from a bird’s eye view.
The walking trail to a fork with a signpost that says “Ravna Reka” starts at the upper station. That is the exact waterway that forms the waterfall and washes the land of the park. On the trail, there is a small stone fountain called Chorbadji with crystal clear water. From the fountain downstream along the river, the trail leads its travellers to a massive rock where the Waterfall Futuna forms. However, to appreciate its beauty, one needs to descend to its foot.
Despite its relatively small 10-metre height, the waterfall makes a lasting impression. Thousands of thin streams create a unique pattern on the rock, and when the southern sun touches the water, a theatrical performance commences. Add to it the roar of falling water and the entirety of nature’s mysteries will unfold, including its magic and enchantment.
