Dobrich is one of the oldest Bulgarian cities that has been flourishing as a craft and trade center for centuries. The majority of traditional crafts are still practiced by the local community, whose members not only used to work hard, but also to rest and relax. In this light, the first public park appeared in Dobrich in the 19th century. Now, Saint George City Park of Dobrich is one of the oldest parks in Bulgaria.
Saint George City Park was opened in 1867. Initially, it occupied a small area of 15 thousand square meters. Today, it is quite large: one of its artificial lakes alone occupies over 18 thousand square meters, whereas its luxurious, neatly trimmed lawns and bright flower beds seem to be endless. The park was designated as a cultural heritage of landscape arts due to its unique layout.
Initially, the park was constituted by four small alleys up to 5 meters wide located near the historic city center. The key plants of the park were mainly drought-resistant as agave, aloe, and yucca. The park used to be a green square without any infrastructure. The post-war years brought new arrangements: a football stadium, gymnastic facilities, Molodost Sports Complex with a large outdoor swimming pool were opened there. The little visitors of the park were also provided with special playgrounds. The aesthetics and beauty of the park were strengthened by artificial ponds, rocks, a cave, and waterfalls.
The number of visitors to the park was rapidly increasing day by day. It has become a real tourist attraction and a favorite vacation spot for the inhabitants of Dobrich. The park is hospitable for everyone, including those who prefer leisurely walks or activities. The local authorities assure that it is just the beginning: they have ambitious plans and grandiose development projects for this lovely place.
