Carnivals, music festivals, and beach parties are now something that rarely surprises travelers. It is unlikely that someone would exceed the success of the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and Venice, the Coachella festival in California, and Burning Man in the Nevada desert. At the same time, sand beach parties become something usual for any trip. Bulgaria mixed these trends and established its own festival to please its citizens and guests in 2008.
Since then, Burgas has started to host a popular annual international Festival of Sand Sculptures on the coast of the Black Sea. Travellers from all over the world attend the festival to admire masterpieces made of sea sand and water-repellent solutions. The number of participants of the festival grows annually. It is worth participating in such a grand event, even as a spectator, at least once, to get a lot of impressions, and maybe to start this unusual hobby.
The festival is usually held in the northern part of the picturesque Marine Park. The participants come mainly from Europe, Asia, and America. Every year, the festival selects a certain topic, which inspires talented sculptors to make their own masterpieces. In the last few years, the visitors of this Bulgarian festival enjoyed huge sand castles, sea monsters, and fairy-tale characters. In 2013, the festival was devoted to the legendary Walk of Fame.
Back then, famous actors and directors, writers, and musicians could be recognized in the figures made of sand. The hallmark was the statue of the Beatles. The sandy figures of the participants of this legendary British band made of sand seemed to arise from the sea. It was a pity they could not move, otherwise, we would hear the familiar sounds of their live music again. The sand sculpture of Quentin Tarantino, a famous director, was also quite popular that year.
