The main natural attraction and a popular place for family holidays, Pirin National Park, lies in the picturesque river valley of Mesta and Nestos, on the slope of the most beautiful mountains in Bulgaria. Initially, this wonderful place was called Vihren National Park and included the oldest nature reserves in the country. It was created with the single purpose of preserving the pristine nature of virgin forests.
In 1974, Pirin National Park received its current name after the mountain range on the slopes of which it is located. The entire vast territory of more than 400 square kilometers is divided between two reserves, Bayuvi Dupki–Dzhindzhiritsa and Yulen. The reserves are strictly protected, so all the local animals feel safe, are not afraid of people, and allow tourists to take spectacular photos.
In total, the park is home to almost 2000 species of animals, 300 of them are very rare, and 15 are endangered. There are especially favorable conditions for bears and wolves. Thus, traveling in the park is allowed only along marked routes.
Fishing enthusiasts also love the park, as there are 6 fish species in local rivers and lakes. The park includes equipped trekking routes, hiking trails, and bike paths, but it is forbidden to travel by car. Moreover, Pirin National Park houses ski and balneological resorts, 8 tourist camps, and 4 campsites for lovers of multi-day hikes. Most of the trails are suitable for small children, so the park is considered an ideal holiday destination for families.
The natural landscapes of the park are fabulous at any time of the year.
The park is filled with blooming plants and aromas in spring. In summer, travelers can have fun picnics. In September-November, Pirin National Park becomes a perfect place to enjoy the colors of fall and the rustle of fallen leaves. And later, in winter, a ski resort opens: the local snow-white mountain slopes await skiers of different levels, from beginners to professionals.
