Ancient legend has it that during the reign of the great Ottoman Empire, there was one settlement in the vicinity of Kaliakra. It was inhabited by the most beautiful innocent girls in Bulgaria. And when the Ottoman soldiers came to these lands, forty noble maidens, who didn't want to be captured, braided their dark blond hair and jumped into the Black Sea. Today, there is a stone obelisk installed at the entrance to the bay in memory of this sad event. The bay itself was called the "Gate of the Forty Maidens".

The legend about the proud girls is not the only story that local elders tell curious travelers. Kaliakra has long been accompanied by mysterious legends, and fabulously beautiful landscapes have made the picturesque cape famous as one of the main tourist attractions in Bulgaria.

This wonderful corner of nature that stretches into the Black Sea for 2 kilometers is located a few kilometers from the small town of Kavarna. Sharp gray rocks up to 70 meters high shelter the sea bay from gusty winds, forming a tranquil harbor. The famous Bulgarian cape changed names many times: "Akre", "Akre Kastelum", "Kalatsekra"... The modern name "Kaliakra" comes from the Greek words that mean "Beautiful Headland". By the way, the ancient Greek historian Strabo named it in his chronicles as "Tirizis". According to Strabo, Lysimachus, the King of Macedonia, hid countless treasures in the underground caves of the cape.

Nowadays, Cape Kaliakra is a popular natural park and archaeological reserve. People come here to admire the sea views, breathe fresh air, indulge in dreams or memories. Fans of sacred architecture enjoy the old small chapel built on the site of an ancient dervish monastery, while the youngest travelers like to watch the numerous flocks of dolphins, walruses, and seals that live in the coastal waters. But the historic fortress, which played a significant role in the Russo-Turkish War, appeals to everyone.
