Vidin is located on the picturesque banks of the Danube. The ancient Bulgarian town with a rich history and culture has become one of the most desirable places to stay. Families come here to sunbathe and swim, go fishing and stroll through the vast outskirts in search of ancient fortresses and historical artifacts, discovered by archaeologists.
One of the most important landmarks of Vidin is the medieval fortress with the funny name Baba Vida. According to local legend, the ruler of Vidin had three daughters, one of whom was named Vida. Unlike her sisters, Vida did not marry a man and ruled the town herself. She built a massive fortress and many town buildings, as a result of which the locals affectionately called her Baba Vida. Hence the name of the fortress, built by Vida during her reign.
The foundation stones of the fortress were laid back in the 3rd century. Like all defensives, it was rebuilt many times until the 19th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, the fortress was an official residence of Tsar Michael Shishman of Bulgaria. Fortunately, the high stone towers and fortress walls, built at those times, can still be seen.
Today, Baba Vida is the only ancient fortress in Bulgaria that has been preserved so well. The world-famous citadel is included in the list of one hundred national tourist sites in Bulgaria and is one of the most visited places in the country.
In 1958, the ancient fortress opened its large doors to all curious travelers. Many stairs, tunnels, secret underground labyrinths are crowned with a small amphitheater, designed for 350 spectators. In summer, the stone stage of the theater often hosts various costumed performances, reconstructions of historical events. And high defensive walls offer a magnificent view of the Danube at any time of the year.
