Mount of the Arts, located between the Grand-Place and the Royal Square, is a small park on a hill with a landscape garden, surrounded by lots of attractions. This place connects the city center with the suburb and is the heart of the Brussels arts life. In this place, there are so many museums, galleries, exhibition spaces and cultural centers, hidden beyond the majestic facades of historical buildings, that the Mount of Arts fully justifies its name.
If you go through the garden and up the staircase to the fountain, you will see one of the most iconic views of Brussels. Directly ahead, there is the historic center of the Belgian capital with the exquisite tower of the Brussels Town Hall, which crowns this panorama. This picturesque view especially impresses during sunsets, when the evening sun paints the sky with the most tender colors and shades.
You can also see other stunning buildings and monuments, which the Mount of Arts is full of.
At the park entrance, guests are welcomed by a bronze sculpture of Belgium King Albert I. The sculpture was created by Alfred Courtens in 1951. Nearby, there is a complex of buildings of the Dynasty Palace, which is decorated with a huge golden clock. Its dial has 12 figures, each depicting a famous Belgium historical or folk character. Every hour one of them appears from a niche on the dial and pleases the audience with a small musical performance.
In the street of Mathon de la Cour, there is a former department store, “Old England,” which stands out against the rest of the buildings by its beautiful modern facade made in the Art Nouveau style. Today in its rooms, there is the Museum of Musical Instruments, which contains more than 1,200 rare exhibits.
There is a former Neo-Gothic style pharmacy, contrasting the modern building. In the past, it was the property of pharmacist Charles Delacre who became famous thanks to the opening of the first chocolate laboratory in the world in 1873. Delacre believed that the delicacy that is so loved by many people contains healing properties. Nowadays, a famous confectionery company has his name, and the building of the former pharmacy is taken by an art gallery, with original interior preserved.
