The cozy Austrian city, located in an ordinary European province a few kilometers from the capital, attracts visitors with its century-old architectural monuments and the best shopping in the country.

The heart of Wiener Neustadt has become a landmark in its own right. Start your journey through the Old Town with the Main Square, or as it is called here – Hauptplatz. See the Town Hal, its colorful old houses with wooden windows, pointed arches, and roof tiles. The buildings are in Baroque and Gothic styles. Many of them have preserved their original appearance. The center of the square is a memorial column in honor of the Virgin Mary, which was erected in the 17th century. It is a snow-white monument with several elegant sculptures. On a sunny day, they are illuminated by the golden rays of a pointed star from the very top of the column.

Take a few steps from the square and come to the Romanesque cathedral (Dom von Wiener Neustadt). The main building is seven centuries old. Gothic choir and transept were added to it in the 14th century. However, this did not break the architectural unity.

The Old Town was once separated by thick walls. They were built at the beginning of the 13th century. The walls survived numerous battles and sieges. Serious damage was caused only by bombs that were dropped on the city almost daily during World War II. About ninety percent of all city buildings were destroyed. All the buildings that surround Wiener Neustadt were carefully rebuilt in the middle of the last century. Fragments of the fortress were preserved near Cathedral Square. The watchtower named Reckturm also remained intact. Today, it houses a museum of weapons. Ruins also lie in the western part of the Old Town. And from the south, City Park (Stadtpark) adjoins the walls. You can take a walk along its well-groomed avenues or rest in the shade of larches, oaks, birches, and other trees.
