Just several kilometers away from Vienna, there is a cozy scenery town of Perchtoldsdorf. It is located to the south of the capital and has always been a favorite place of the Austrian nobility. Representatives of the upper classes from all over the country came there to relax, exchange the latest news and make deals.
There were many people who wanted to build their houses in these places, but there was not enough space, so the authorities prohibited building. However, all the rules have exceptions. The royal family was given a picturesque land for a small castle, which was also meant to protect the southern boundaries of Austria. Its construction started in the XI century and had continued for several centuries. Thus, all the constructions are of different ages and styles. Some of them were built as late as at the beginning of the XX century. However, it is impossible to call it an architectural turmoil. All the buildings are united with the common spirit of eclecticism. Such a long history of construction and a combination of different styles are what make this castle unique.
Many towers of different shapes and sizes make the castle more exquisite. Round and rectangular, small and large, with triangular roofs, made of red tiles and turquoise metal. In Perchtoldsdorf, there is the oldest watchtower in Austria; the city clock is installed on it. Huge lancet windows with stained-glass windows telling stories of the life of the royal family will surely attract your attention. They repeat the architectural lines of the arched entrances, which creates a sense of unity of the structure.
Today, there is an entertainment complex with a relatively developed infrastructure inside the castle. There is an art gallery with lots of exhibitions that tell about the history of the castle, the royal family and Austria.
After the tour, you can take a rest in a cozy restaurant, taste national dishes, drink some coffee with a pastry from a local bakery. There was built a small hotel for guests, so you can stay there for a couple of nights and watch the sunrise.
