Austria is full of natural attractions. Lake Seegrotte can rightfully be considered one of them. Its feature is that this lake is located underground, in a very picturesque grotto. The place is so original and beautiful that Walt Disney studios used it as a set for the movie "The Three Musketeers"!
This lake is not of natural origin, which, however, does not detract from its beauty. It appeared due to the fact that a novice entrepreneur decided to conduct explosive work there. Because one of the ordinary residents of a nearby town discovered deposits of gypsum there in the 19th century.
The entrepreneur decided to start developing this field. But something went wrong: he may have come across underground water. There was a massive release of 20 million liters of water in 1912. The lower tunnel was completely submerged. So gypsum production had to be stopped.
After that, this place was empty for many years. During this time, the water gradually filled it, creating a stunningly beautiful lake Seegrotte. Enterprising businessmen sometimes tried to use the former mine to grow mushrooms and store wine. However, they didn't succeed. Then the grotto was forgotten again.
It was discovered by speleologists almost 20 years later! Lovers of exploring the caves could not take their eyes off the beauty that opened up! They had to tell people about it. In 1932, access to the lake was opened through their efforts. Unfortunately, not for a long time.
After the beginning of World War II, an aircraft factory was built nearby. Wehrmacht prisoners of war were rounded up there. Water was pumped out of the caves and 2 thousand prisoners of war were driven into the grotto. At the end of the war, this factory was destroyed. And the lake became private property. It took 3 years to restore this place and reopen it to visitors. Now the underground complex invites visitors on a permanent basis.
