The very well preserved Middle Ages Schloss Glopper, or simply Glopper, as locals call the castle, is located at the very top of a hill in the vicinity of Hohenems, which offers a fascinating view of three countries at once. This is not to mention that the covered in snow mountain peaks of the Alps and green meadows and crystal clear waters of Lake Constance are seen from its spacious terrace. All this indeed reminds of a heavenly place, which does not only have a rich historical heritage but also does not lack the European comfort of the highest level. In this place, there is an opportunity to touch the stone walls of knights’ time, take a look at graph’s stables, and then take a scented bath and go to a carefully cooked dinner. Today the Schloss Glopper castle is a luxurious hotel, which has preserved the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. But in the XIV-XV centuries, it was a real fortress, which protected the city and all the local lands.

In 1343, after the emperor Ludwig II gave his permission, a German nobleman and knight Ulrich I von Ems built this castle to settle his stables there. However, at the beginning of the XV century, the Appenzell wars started. The castle was a protection and a fortress for its residents many times. During one of the battles in 1407, it was almost fully destroyed. Its new owners, the family of graph Hohenems, restored the castle, and its appearance has been preserved unchanged up to our time.

In 1843, the property was passed on to an ancient princely family of Waldburg-Zeil. Today the castle is under their control; they turned it into a luxurious hotel.
