The Viennese classical scholar Joseph Haydn spent the last twelve years of his life in the town of Eisenstadt. He bought a house and moved there after a trip to England.
The music and life of Haydn are in the center of the exposition. By the time he moved to that city, the composer's popularity and reputation had peaked. Numerous guests, both from his country and from abroad, always visited Haydn. It was their records and memories that made it possible to make the appearance of the rooms as close as possible to what it was when their famous owner was alive. For that aim, even the walls of the house were destroyed and restored again. As an introduction to the exhibition, the first floor is full of letters, diaries, and other paper evidence, which tells about the life and creativity of the Viennese classic.
In one of the most interesting rooms, there are several copies of compositions that were written by hand; Haydn put them into a frame and hung them on the wall in his bedroom when he was alive. This part of the house was reserved for demonstration of "objects of glory": medals, diplomas, and gifts that the composer received from the rich and influential people of his time and which he proudly showed to his guests.
Apart from Haydn's piano, his clavichord, which was later obtained by Johannes Brahms, was also preserved. Portraits and personal items of the classic, as well as tableware, everyday items, furniture and some clothes, are displayed in the house. With the furniture given by other museums, there are tables, chairs and armchairs, which belonged to Haydn. One of the pearls of the Haydn house-museum is a small garden, which was recreated several years ago. The green oasis in the built-up area was reconstructed according to the preserved park schemes, which belonged to the nobility at the beginning of the 19th century. Colorful flowers, fruit trees, bushes are buried in the greenery. There are especially lots of lilacs here. In the shadow, there are cozy benches. It is possible that one of the masterpieces of the Viennese classical composer was created there.
