If you look at a map of Honduras, you will be amazed at the number of forests and valleys. Thanks to the mild climate and abundance of precipitation, the flora and fauna please everyone who decides to look behind the emerald curtain. However, it was the cloudy forest of salamanders that became the symbol of the country.
Cusuco National Park is located near Choloma. This protected area is famous for a huge number of different types of salamanders. The park was even named after them. Cusuco means salamander in the local language.
In addition to these amphibians, mountain oaks have become the hallmark of the forest. Century-old trees reach forty meters in height. These giants cover other plants and animals with their crowns. So they protect them from the scorching sun and torrential rains, creating comfortable living conditions. The park also has many conifers, including rare blue pines and broadleaf tobacco. It is amazing how orchids coexist with larch trees. Bright flowers and aerial roots wrap around tree trunks overgrown with moss. The colorful thickets of wild grapes stand out especially against the background of greenery.
The animal world is slightly less diverse than the plant world. However, it does not lose its value. There are jaguars and pumas. Unfortunately, they are not often seen by tourists. However, in particularly remote parts of the forest, animals enjoy resting on trees. Do not forget about the predatory nature of these animals, and follow the rules of behavior and photography. But you don’t have to look and wait for a meeting with the monkeys. The park is home to six rare species. Many of them will not mind meeting the guests. Moreover, you can often see bright exotic birds on the branches. The park has about a hundred species.
Cusuco National Park is open daily from 6 am to 5 pm. The admission fee is $ 10. If you want to go on a group tour, you should visit the official website of the park and check the time.
