The sun, sea, and sand of the Guatemalan port city of Puerto Barrios attract thousands of tourists from different countries every year. You can hear the sounds of national music everywhere. And a walk through the buildings of the colonial period is an unforgettable experience. What else could attract an experienced traveler to these places? In addition to the numerous Indian villages of the Maya descendants, there is the Cerro San Gil National Nature Reserve that is spread over an area of about 50 hectares.

The opening of the park in the vicinity of Puerto Barrios was the starting point in the development of a new tourist destination for this region, ecotourism. Hiking, swimming in natural reservoirs, and exploring the world of flora and fauna have made this park a desirable destination for outdoor enthusiasts. However, even less energetic visitors have something to do there. It is possible to go on an everyday tour of the rainforest by train. But it’s better to spend more than one day on a trip and enjoy every corner of the park and see all its inhabitants.

You can walk with the tour, or on your own. All tourist routes are well equipped with walking paths and viewing platforms, which offer stunning views. The park area is the rainiest place in Guatemala. So there are many rivers, lakes, and waterfalls on its territory. What could be more pleasant than swimming in the cool waters of marvelous natural lagoons on a hot day? The only reservoir inaccessible to tourists is the Las Escobas River. Access to the river is limited in order to maintain the purity of the water as it supplies the entire city.

The tropical forests of the reserve are home to about half of the world's plant species. Moreover, the world of fauna is represented by such amazing birds as the pileated woodpecker, rainbow toucan, and brown pelican. Also, you can see tapirs and monkeys as well as a beautiful wild jaguar.
