Caves

In this world, so many caves were discovered that a separate science was needed to study them and new specialists, speleologists, appeared. In every country, people are happy to share their discoveries: new caves and grottos. Tourists come to see another miracle of nature, touch the age-old formations, and feel their power. Sometimes they are even called places of power for everything that once happened in them, for all the stories that their walls remember.

The Guatemalan city of Flores also has caves that for many years kept their secrets from sight in the depths of Lake Petén Itzá. Nobody knew about their existence until recently, although many centuries ago the ancient Mayan tribes walked through their mazes, performed ritual rites. Perhaps this place was someone's hidey-hole from a hungry beast or the cruelty of other people. Scientists are still digging in these places, some even find ancient artifacts here and there. However, no one knows for sure what awaits him in the deeper grottoes and mazes of the Ak'tun Kan Caves.

These days, it takes less than an hour to explore the impressive karst formations. On the one hand, they cast funny shadows on the walls and ceiling which look like the heroes of myths and fairy tales. On the other hand, these shadows become eerie and frightening as if at this moment sacrificial rites of the peoples of ancient civilization are taking place. A tourist site of about a kilometer long, well-lit for inspection, was opened there. You can see a lot of stalagmites and stalactites, which were called by rare names of the inhabitants of this region. By the way, the caves themselves got their name back in Mayan times. Ak'tun Kan means "cave of the snake" in the ancient dialect, although no one has ever seen a snake there. Most likely, this name was given to the cave for the shape of its maze, which resembles a wriggling snake 2.5 kilometers long. Perhaps in a few years, speleologists and archaeologists will discover all the mazes, and the curious travelers will see what is now even hard to imagine.
