You are sailing in a small boat through dense mangroves. They are everywhere. You cannot see the shore - the roots of the trees cover everything. But something red flashed ahead. Then once again, and again. And the whole flock of red ibis soars to the sky. Hundreds of these beautiful birds inhabit the Caroni Nature Reserve on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
Only 13 kilometers and you are far away from noisy civilization hurrying somewhere. You find yourself among plants, swamps, and incredible birds. Caroni Park is located on 15 thousand acres on the west coast of Trinidad. It is considered the National Reserve and the paradise of birds and ornithologists. Mangrove trees grow here very closely. They form an impassable and dark jungle. Guides know some routes, hallow canals, and lakes with various species of birds.
The Karoni swamps inhabit 157 species of birds in total. You can see flamingos, white and blue herons, and, of course, the scarlet ibis. We can say that the unofficial color of the reserve is red. There are too many birds with feathers of different shades of red. It is better to watch a scarlet ibis in the afternoon. In the morning, these birds fly to Venezuela, and in the evening return to Caroni.
In these forests, you can find not only birds. During the tour, you can see snakes basking in the sun, lazy caimans, crocodiles, iguanas, and even bats. But you should not go on an adventure all alone. If you do not want to swim through dense thickets of mangrove trees, the park has some equipped viewpoints. But the strongest emotions and unforgettable impressions you get coming in thick of things.
It is an absolute unity with nature. Coming back to the city, you feel a completely different person. That is a wild person but calm and full of energy.
