Fort El Morro

Good weather, no clouds in the sky, only dozens of multicolored kites. On a green lawn, looking at the endless ocean, inhabitants, and tourists of Puerto Rico have a picnic. On a nice day, there are so many people. And the impenetrable El Morro, which means “cape”, is rising behind them.

It is a huge stone citadel protecting Puerto Rico from enemy attacks. The impregnable walls of El Morro have caused success in the matter of anyone who besieged it from the ocean. A lot of people tried to do it, but no one got El Morro. Fort repulsed all assaults.

You come to Puerto Rico and understand the invaders. It would be so great to call the Atlantic Ocean of your own and not to leave. The military and pirates tried to get the island, but the Spaniards were ready for it. They built a new fort to replace the old one. They even installed four cannons and continued to strengthen their positions. 

This is how thick, frightening walls of the fort were built. From the water, the citadel of El Morro looks very militant. Looking at this fort, which occupies the entire cape of the San Juan harbor, you are glad of having good intentions. For example, you can take a photo, learn the history of the place, relax on the green lawn.

El Morro is so large. Fort consists of six levels. You can see dungeons and military barracks, shafts with cannons, and small turrets. Take comfortable shoes with you. You have to walk a lot, without stopping. Though the citadel has places where time stands. So, coming to the upper levels of a small turret, you can sit on the very edge of a parapet, look into the distance, and listen to the waves crashing against the coastal cliffs. It is a very beautiful place, especially at sunset.
