One of the largest, most populated, and incredibly mysterious – all that can be said about the island of Tanna. There are always many tourists coming to a calm vacation, beautiful nature, clean air, living in comfortable bungalows located in pristine forests, or on the board of the island. 

The discoverer of the island of Tanna was the famous Captain James Cook, landing there in 1774. He and members of his team were the first Europeans coming to the island. They were impressed with the beauty and originality of the island’s nature. 

The Tanna landscape is a unique mix of savanna, green plains, centuries-old forests, and quite high mountains.

 The main sight of the island is the permanently active Yasur volcano. It is not just the largest volcano in Vanuatu, but also the most accessible active volcano for tourists on the planet. To see this nature miracle you should not overcome long distances or use special transport, it is enough just to walk along the island through the forest, and you get to the foot of that giant. 

There are also the cascades of waterfalls, sulfur sources, and Lake Siwi which disappeared in 2000 after the strong eruption of the Yasur volcano. It completely demolished a deep lake. 

Coming to the island, you need to see the folk custom village - a picturesque place with the preserved local culture, the most original of all the islands of the archipelago. There, you feel that the time stopped, the locals walk in national costumes, speak their dialect, and lead a life that was normal one or even two hundred years ago. Everything is still governed by headmen having a hierarchy, which allows them to enact laws and regulate the behavior of people within the tribes. There are accepted old rituals and rejected modern technical innovations. Surprisingly, it is not only a tourist site but an ordinary village. Many centuries ago, the locals refused to obey the Europeans and continue to live within their national culture.

Ancient legends tell that many centuries ago, the island of Tanna was the only piece of land on the entire universe. Seeing this injustice, the local god Mahdikdik took small pieces of soil from the Yasur volcano and threw it across the universe. So, that is how the Earth and other planets were created.

Now, although indigenous inhabitants have lived with the Europeans for several centuries, their beliefs and traditions remain the same. Even outside the folk Custom village, aborigines often do not accept the European way of life: education, medicine, clothes. They continue to live according to the covenants, trusting in the power of nature and spirits.
