One further tug and you are already on the palm tree cutting a coconut. The main thing is not to look down! You can slide down the smooth trunk of a palm tree and hurt yourself of a sudden. There are only 15 meters, but it is unpleasant to fall. No one ever heard of tether there. Residents of the island of Nukunonu and the village of the same name can perfectly climb trees without any technical devices. They learn this almost from infancy because coconuts are almost the only food on the island. There are also, of course, gifts of the sea. But most of the food is imported from New Zealand.
Nukunonu Island is one of the three most interesting islands in the territory of Tokelau. You will not regret that you sailed there. The island attracts by not only its beaches and coral reefs around, but also the local flavor.
Nukunonu Island was discovered at the end of the 18th century. The British went in search of the Bounty ship captured by the rebel lovers and came to a shield-like atoll. There were several small islands around the big island, which the locals use as a cemetery or pigsty.
Have you ever seen so many coconut trees? There are a lot of them on the island of Nukunonu. However, this is almost all that is there. There is not even freshwater. Although the locals are cheerful: they came up with the idea of collecting rainwater.
In addition to palm trees, there are also beaches. Tourists love Nukunonu because of this. The island is inhabited by only about 500 people, so the beaches and coastal reefs are almost deserted. You can wander around, drinking coconut milk straight from the nut, and watch the stunning sunset.
You can also play. Just ask and the friendly locals will be happy to teach you the ancient art of "kilikiti". This is a game similar to cricket. There are not many tourists there, so everyone is treated like a special guest by the locals. Strangers will be shown "tricks" or "game with fish". Small reef fish are tamed using special techniques and devices. And they perform almost circus acts.
Pay attention to how the locals fish. You will not see anything like this anywhere else in the world. The inhabitants of Nukunonu have two special techniques: shark fishing with the bag and octopus fishing with the pitcher.
In the first case, a blood-soaked canvas bag is thrown into the water. After a while, the predator begins to attack, the fishermen jump into the water, wrap a bag over the fish's head, preventing it from moving and breathing, and then drag it into the boat.
The octopus is also caught in a very sophisticated way. A pitcher with a narrow pebble filled with the remains of fish is thrown into the water. The octopus crawls in to eat, but can't get out.
