Thatched huts, boats on the coast, nets, bright sunset coloring everything in orange-red tones, golden sands, azure sky, and the ocean ... The beauties of French Polynesia attract not only thousands of tourists but also actors, directors, and artists. One of the most famous artists is, of course, Paul Gauguin. He left a visible trace on the coast of the southern Pacific islands and captured them on his paintings.
The memory of Paul Gauguin, living for almost ten years in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands among the locals, is cherished by the islanders. In 1891, the successful and beloved by the public Gauguin left the wife and children in Paris and went to the trip along the southern islands of the Pacific Ocean. In Tahiti, he created the paintings making him worldwide famous: “Are you jealous?”, “Who are we?”, “Woman holding a fetus” and others.
The Museum of the Post-Impressionist artist became one of the main sights of French Polynesia. Represented personal items and documents tell about the life and work of Gauguin. Probably, that is the only place on the planet revealing the secrets of the last years of the artist.
The Japanese-style building is located in the National Botanical Garden. In the cozy house are kept original documents of the artist: photographs taken in Tahiti, letters, reproductions, sculptures, engravings, and original canvases, as well as clothes, tools, cutlery, and tableware.
The spirit of creativity reigns in this place. Apart from the permanent exhibition, the museum also presents the works of various local artists or authors depicting islands on their canvases. For example, there were shown the original paintings of an Englishwoman Constance Gordon-Cumming painted Tahiti and Moorea.
In the store next to the museum you can buy reproductions of Gauguin, paintings of Gordon-Cumming , and works of Tahitian artists.
