Maimun Palace (Istana Maimun in Indonesian) is a royal residence built by Sultan Ma'mun Al Rashid Perkasa Alam Shah in 1887-1891. Nowadays, the palace complex with an area of 2772 sq.m. is a museum.
Both Indonesians and travelers who want to look in the past and understand the lifestyle of local nobility are eager to see the regal building consisting of 30 rooms.
Medan is the third-largest city of Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya, and Maimun Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces in Indonesia. It was designed by the Dutch architect Theodoor van Erp. The building consists of only two floors, but its saturation with unusual attributes is aristocratic. The palace is divided into three parts: the main building, the left wing and the right wing. The main hall with a Malay-style throne, decorations, lamps and elegant furniture is particularly attractive to visitors. The color scheme has local tones: greenery, woody tones, sunny colors. The dominance of ocher color and the glow of the light also create a royal atmosphere. To comprehend who local sultans were, just look into one of the halls telling the stories of the rulers.
Elements of Islamic architecture are balanced in the building, created by a European. Rich interiors, sculptural decoration, rooms with unique designs and accessories mix elements of Malay, Indian, Spanish and Italian styles. A mix of Europe and Asia is everywhere here: from wall ornaments, arches, ceilings to furniture. It is fascinating to see such a vivid historical symbiosis in detail.
Want to feel like a local ruler? You can try, and make a photoshoot as well: there is a rental of costumes in the traditional Malay style. Temporary vestments are at a very modest price of less than $ 1. There are also several shops with local souvenirs in the palace.
