There are not many Chinese cities that can boast a real palace complex, especially when it consists of not just one beautiful building, but ten of them! And each of them claims to be the most attractive and interesting architectural design.
Changchun has such a landmark. This is the Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo. Now all buildings of this complex house one of the largest museums in the country. But in the past, everything was different.
Initially, there were only a few simple buildings in this area that housed administrative organizations. But, from 1932 to 1945, one of these houses became the residence of the last imperial family in the Celestial Empire. Emperor Puyi, who lived here with his four wives, was the ruler of Manchukuo, a puppet state formed in the northeast of modern China after the Japanese took over this part of the country. In fact, Puyi did not have any power, he was only allowed to build and expand his palace. This is what he was doing for the incomplete 15 years he had lived in this city.
After the cultural revolution and the change of power, the palace complex remained unclaimed for quite some time. The buildings required repairs and restoration, and it was necessary to figure out how to use them. So, in 1984, the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo opened its doors as one of the largest and most interesting museums in the country.
The museum has a total area of over 136,000 square meters! So it is simply impossible to see everything in one day. After all, you can visit the Jixi Building, built in the Russian style for the imperial family. The Throne Hall of Manchukuo is the most luxurious building in the complex. The Reception Hall, or, as it is called now, the Emperor's office center, is the Qinmin Building. There are also separate houses for the canteen, the Emperor's sisters' rooms, for receiving guests and negotiate.
Inside the complex, there are landscaped gardens and beautiful greenhouses. The unique heritage of the last Emperor today is the main architectural and cultural treasure of the city.
