Temples, Churches

Battambang is a city of temples. There are new, modern, newly built temples or old, destroyed ones, or just ruins sometimes.

The old temple and its new variation – you can find both 10 kilometers from the city. The new temple was built based on the model and likeness of the old one, and it is this temple that is welcoming tourists now. Its beauty is striking. It consists of many carved elements and seems very light and weightless as if made of paper. The combination of sky-blue, dark green, and gold colors makes you examine the details constantly. Stairs, railings, entrances are decorated with figured carvings and bas-reliefs, and there are bright paintings depicting scenes of the Buddha life on the ceiling. There is a 28-meter statue of the Saint near the temple.

The temple is active, so there are often services and celebrations. A little further away, there is the partially destroyed and looted ancient temple of Wat Ek Phnom, hidden from prying eyes by dense thickets of vines and moss.

It was built in the XI century under the rule of King Suryavarman I. The ruler of Cambodia focused on the west and decided to build a temple from more expensive materials than those used previously. Even though the temple has long been abandoned, the people's path to it has not yet overgrown. Despite the fact that it is located on a small hill, you will not have to make much effort, but get ready to jump over the stones. Along the way, you can meet local people, who like to organize picnics here.

The remains of one of the most beautiful temples in Battambang are impressive. They seem so majestic and menacing. You feel like a tomb raider. You will want to wander among the ruins and search for treasures.

After so many years of existence, the temple is almost nothing but stones, but still, there is something interesting here. Drawings and bas-reliefs are still preserved on the remaining walls and stones. Here you can see images of the Buddha and scenes from the life of the Saint.
