Bizerte is one of the oldest cities in Tunisia. The history is felt at every step along the streets of this city. Over a thousand-year history, whoever did not own this city, who only did not fight for the right to rule it. The raids were often, so the number of defensive structures increased. One of the witnesses of such events of the 16th century was a beautiful Spanish Fort.
It seems to close the old city. Before exploring the fort stone by stone, it's better to climb to its top. You will be excited! The whole city is visible from above! There are stunning, scenic views of the port and the Mediterranean Sea. You will want to stay there! However, do not forget that parts of the fort can tell you a lot of interesting things.
Trade was going well. The city was developing and thriving. And the Spanish Fort was a symbol of the power and prosperity of the city as well as of one of the most favorable periods in its history. Algerian Pasha decided to build a fort to protect the prosperous city from the Spaniards. The fort project was made by a Sicilian engineer. However, they began to build the fort too late. So it was completed by those from whom it was supposed to protect, the Spaniards. Thus, the fort lived up to its name.
The 40-meter hill became the site of a future historical monument and one of the most striking attractions in Tunisia. The fort had the shape of a regular polygon with thirteen sides. The old stone walls of the fort were equipped with cannons to attack enemies who came too close to the city.
Very few rooms have been preserved over the years. However, the main area of the fort is relatively unscathed. And it's big enough. Cross it, climb the steps, and there you are looking down on the city. The fort is literally full of history. There you can not only learn more about Bizerte and Tunisia but also enjoy beautiful views of the city and port.
